Look to Your Left to See Sun…

Iloilo commuter vehicles that resemble classier cars. Don’t worry  they’re not as fast as the real thing; overtake them with care and push onward, past the municipalities of Guimbal and Tigbauan until you reach the town of Miag-Ao. Stop for a seafood lunch at Doming’s to the right of the highway. This seaside eatery serves the best kinilaw (vinegar-cooked fi sh) this side of Panay, as well as its signature dish a bucket of boiled fresh oysters for less than PHP100. Continue on into the Miag-Ao town plaza and its UNESCO World Heritage church.

UNESCO World-Heritage Church
Dedicated to Santo Tomas de Villanueva, this massive structure is renowned for its fortress-like architecture and the Aztec-styled carvings that adorn its facade. Similarly, the church of nearby San Joaquin sports its own stylized bas reliefs. From San Joaquin the fl at lowland roads begin to gradually slope upward. Turn right at the Tiolas junction and watch the scenery change from grassland and coconut trees, to rolling hills topped with verdant greens. Here the weather is cooler and carabaos outnumber jeepneys on the concrete. This highland portion lasts for about 20km, and before you know it you’re once again by the sea.
